Mission & Vision

Mission

Mission

EDceptional drives equity and excellence in education, by empowering families through access to high-quality options, providing academic supports to schools, and collaborating with partners to enhance Rochester’s charter school ecosystem.

Vision

Vision

EDceptional envisions a reimagined educational landscape in Rochester where all children have access to a great school, creating a lasting, positive impact on the future of our city.

Our current high-impact initiatives include:

School Choice

Under EDceptional’s management, all Rochester charter schools collaborate to provide access and enrollment at high performing schools. GoodSchoolsRoc.org is a web portal where parents can learn all about all of Rochester’s charter schools and submit a single application to multiple schools. Our promotional efforts assure that parents know they have a choice when it comes to their children’s public education.  Visit GoodSchoolsRoc.org to learn more.

Achieving Excellence in Schools

Rochester is in an educational crisis with its students scoring at national lows in subject matter proficiency and graduation rates.  Though outperforming district schools significantly, the performance of the charter sector is uneven and should be much better.  It is our goal to help them achieve excellence.

The drivers of school excellence are:

  1. Strong leadership, where boards and school management teams have clear mission alignment, a drive for excellence, and the proper management disciplines to assure that all staff are performing well.
  2. Excellent teaching achieved through deep training and coaching on a continuous basis, along with excellent curricula.
  3. A strong school culture of success, behavioral norms for all adults and children alike, and celebration of learning and academic achievement.

EDceptional provides proactive supports and resources to help schools implement the drivers of excellence, a sustainable ecosystem encouraging further collaboration within the entire charter school sector, and undertaking targeted actions in response to schools’ needs.

Reading Initiative

Reading underlies all other learning; it should be the highest priority for schools. EDceptional has inaugurated a program to help charter schools achieve grade-level reading proficiencies for 60%-80% of their students, emulating successful programs in Indianapolis, New Orleans, Harlem and Washington, D.C., that help schools reach these levels.  EDceptional offers critical resources and expert coaches to work in the classroom helping teachers master the science of reading, while helping school leaders learn how to observe classrooms, provide positive feedback to teachers and analyze data to identify each child’s specific learning needs.

Our Plan

Over the next three years, we will work with schools to help identify their needs and access targeted resources.
